Cosmetics include more than just what people cosider make up, Cosmetics is so often considered, just foundations, eyeshadows, mascaras etc.
It is more than this.

The History of Cosmetics.
The use of cosmetics started in Egypt. This is when the first recorded type of Cosmetic Use that has happened, Around the time of 3500BC.
Rich Egyptian women would apply make up to enhance their Natural beauty.
Ancient Egyptians would lather themselves in perfumes made of Oils and fats, that had been mixed with Herbs and Nice Smelling Plants.
They did not apply anything to the all round skin on their faces, Instead they would paint specific parts.
They would use pigment colours, such as green and blue to contrast their skin shades.
They would also use what these days we would call eyeliner. They called it "Kohl" as it was made out of coal, giving it, its black colouring
They also would use th eequililant to Lipstick these days.
Red ochre clay was mixed with water to make this
The Romans also used make up.
Also, only the richer romans or the Patricians would wear make up.
The Fashion of the time was pale skin.
The Romans would use Chalk and a White lead called "Ceruse" to achieve this look.
Like the Egyptians, they would also mix The Clay Red Ochre with the Chalk or Ceruse to give a pink or red blush to the face, and also to make "Lipstick"
The Romans also liked the Black Eyeliner look, they used Soot, mixed wiuth bear fat and oil to make it stay on the face.
They also used Eyeshadow, made from Saffron, giving it a Orange/Yellow look.
Only the Rich could afford make up, as many of these spices and clays were too expensive for the Normal "Plebian" Roman.
Elizebethen Make Up :
In Elizebethen times, Queen Elizebeth set the trend of wearing make up.
Like the Romans, they liked the Pale Look, and used "Ceruse" which they had then determind was actually poisionous to the human body, but elizebethen women desired the look so much they would wear it anyway.
Queen Elizebeth was a big fan of make up, when she was young she wore elaborate eyemake up, to stand out from the crowd, but as she grew older and got more wrinkles and imperfections in her skin, she experimented more with make up, using more to cover the imperfections.
During Elizebethan times, a pale complection was not just a desired look because they thought it looked good, the rich also wore it as it showed wealth and importance. The reason Queen Elizebeth wore such a pale complexion was she also wanted to be considered "The Virgin Queen", so she wanted to look Flawless and Angelic.
Lower classes of people had to work so had darker skin as they would be outside and would get somewhat of a tan. This way, everyone could judge if someone was Rich or poor, and the higher classes wanted to make sure there was a distinct differene between them and the commoners.
